WINNING WAYS

Richard Whitaker

A brief History - Richard Whitaker

Richard & Liz Whitaker

Everyone loves a winner!
Richard's winning record has been excellent over the past few years and is consistently in the 8-12% ratio of winners to runners.

Previous notable winners include CAPTAIN RIO (Group winner), ORIENT (5f record holder at Ascot), CLANTIME, LAGO DI VARANO and more recently TABARET, who won a Listed race at York in 2006 and DAMIKA 2nd in a Listed race in 2008. PIPERS NOTE had a lot of success here too. Richard achieved another ambition in 2010 winning his local race, the Great St Wilfred at Ripon with DAMIKA.

2018 was a successful season, especially for Nice Day Out Partnership's ROUND THE ISLAND, who won 3 races and was also placed. SILK MILL BLUE won twice, and PENNY POT LANE won yet again- she has now won five times. 2019 has started well with STONEY LANE winning on only his second race!

Richard began training in 1977 at Hellwood Farm, prior to which, he was a top class Point-to-Point rider. Simon was also a regular rider, so they both have a feel for race riding as well as training. For ten years, Richard trained from Grange Park Stables at Wetherby, but as the property was redeveloped into 'mews cottages' in 1996, the Whitakers moved back to their original training establishment at Scarcroft.

Richard believes in keeping his training fees at a reasonable rate whilst also ensuring that the horses have the best care. "Racehorse ownership should be fun and we try to make it enjoyable for every owner, win or lose".
